Food alone is good; wine alone is good; but food and wine together is heaven!

Favourite Wines

A relatively inexpensive, but enjoyable favourite of mine is Château Marsau, which I buy from Berry Brothers who recommended it.

My first purchase was the 2001, at £13.95, which was a great wine, at a relatively modest price. Unfortunately, this vintage has now all sold, but there are a few bottles of 2004 remaining.

During our first ever visit to a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, for our pudding, my oldest son and I tried a glass each of Château d'Yquem sauternes. This was also my introduction to sauternes, so it was a great way to start with what is recognised as the world's best. Inexperienced at tasting fine wine, this small glass (£45) was unforgettable ecstasy. Now I'm a fan of sauternes and normally finish a meal with a glass, whenever it's available in restaurants.

Cheerful and very cheap, is ASDA's own label Chilean Merlot. At £3.28 this is a bargain, which other shoppers have also discovered, because the shelves are often empty and I leave disappointed. I don't know of a better wine for this low price.
